As Katrina has already stated, we have made it back in Elmira safety. The last two days have consisted of traveling and enjoying our last few days together. Saturday was the drive from Berea, Kentucky to Harrisonburg, Virginia. Saturday also marked Katrina's 20th birthday! We stopped along the day to eat at a really amazing food court catered by the GreenBrier Luxury Resort. We all really enjoyed it. We arrived in Harrisonburg, Virginia at around 3:30 and all agreed that we should relax before we head out for our last dinner together. Harrisonburg was really hot and the temperature was close to 90 degrees, so we all decided to take advantage of the pool until our dinner plans at L'Italia at 7:00 p.m. L'Italia had amazing italian food and all of us enjoyed the brushetta, pasta, steak, and deserts we all ate throughout the meal. After dinner we decided to drive through James Madison University (JMU) to take a look at the campus. We all were amazed at how big and beautiful the campus was. Our trip in many ways indirectly took on a new purpose. For all of us it made us start thinking about graduate schools and we were able to visit two universities and drive through two. After JMU we stopped at Starbuck's and drank coffee and chatted about our trip. A good way to end it! We also took a picture together for the last time as one big group for Katrina's birthday. I do not have the picture, but hopefully it will appear on this blog soon! After Starbuck's, we all went back to the hotel and settled into our beds. It was nice to sleep in a big bed, with comfy sheets after being in a dorm bed for the last couple of weeks. We all went to bed early since we had a six a.m. wake up call to head back to ELMIRA!

The ride back to Elmira was long, since we were all so anxious to be reunited with our friends and family. At the same time, however, we were all sad that this would be our last day as one big group. I know we have said it on this blog before, but we really have become a family! We ate breakfast at the hotel and were on the road by 7:30 a.m. The day consisted of Dr. Johnson driving, with the rest of us sleeping. We stopped about an hour outside of Elmira at Taryn's house in Mansfield, PA. Taryn's family made us homemade lemonade and snacks and it was a much needed final break before the last hour to Elmira. Thanks Rumsey's!

We are all back at Elmira. Some of us are leaving in the next couple of days for the summer, while others of us will be staying and working and taking classes at Elmira over the summer. Also for Melinda this is her last week here at EC before she graduates! We all are happy to be back, but also extremely happy that we had the opportunity to go to Kentucky this Term III
We re-screened children who had failed the first round of hearing screenings. We soon realized that we have officially had an impact on a child's health! The child saw her pediatrician after we had reported a type B tympanogram (tympanometry tests the condition of the inner ear and the flexibility of the ear drum). She was given antibiotics and just one week later (today), she had a type C tympanogram result. In other words, we indicated that something was going on in her inner ear, she was treated by her pediatrician, and we noted a significant improvement in her tympanogram results after just a week. Pretty cool! :)

We spent the rest of the day taking it easy and soaking in our last day in Kentucky. Nolan, Kara, and I went crawdad fishing for several hours in the creek behind the school. We found stones that were perfect for skipping along the water. After meandering through the local shops one last time, we had a lovely dinner at the Boone Tavern.

Since we were unable to take pictures of the children at the CLD, we decided to take pictures of ourselves undergoing various parts of the hearing screening process...
This morning we did not go to the CDL, however we did not sleep in late. We got up and headed off to Tennessee this morning. We arrived at the Museum of Appalachia around 11:30 and explored until about 3:30. Around 1:15 we ate lunch at the little diner at the museum. At this museum there were many different buildings that ranged from homes to school houses. This was a very interesting place to attend not only were all the buildings we saw interesting but about halfway through the little 'village' there were two people playing instruments and singing. This was Appalachian music, as they so said. While walking to the different buildings we encountered a few animals. There were roosters, peacocks, salamanders, and goats. We all got excited when it came to seeing these animals that we tried feeding them, which worked and kept us busy for longer. We finally gave up on the animals and explored the gift shop then went back on the road to Berea. Once back to Berea we had a little time off until Taryn, Katrina, Dr. Johnson, and I attended the Berea Alumni Bluegrass concert on campus. They even sang one of our trip songs, "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive', which we all loved. After the concert us four went to Papalino's for a late dinner because we did not have dinner yet. The pizza was the best that we had yet. We are all preparing now for our last day at the CDL.

The children we screened were younger, therefore it was more difficult to keep their attention. This really enforced the idea we need to be energetic and animated to put the children at ease and keep their attention, which is an area we keep improving upon. During the screening today the way in which we worked truly seemed professional, I feel that we really have grown as individual students, and as a group.

After the CDL we took a small break to relax before heading off to Fort Boonesborough. Fort Boonesborough is the Reconstruction of the fort which was once built by Daniel Boone and his follows. Daniel Boone founded the site when we was working for Richard Henderson clearing a way through the Cumberland Gap. We really found interest in the site. It was almost like a reenactment village because in some of the log cabins there were individuals dressed in clothing from the original time of the fort showing traditional skills such as woodworking, candle making, ceramics, and weaving. Dr Johnson, Melinda and I also attended an orientation video on the fort which gave us a basic overview of the fort and the surrounding troubles.
The CDL was in full swing this morning and we were able to screen five children. We were able to screen a pair of two brothers, both with PE-Tubes in their ears. It was a great experience for all of us to see what these tubes look like and their effects on the screening process. Also today we screened a wide age range. Two of the children were over five years old, well others were two. Especially with the two year old's, we had to stay pretty lively and animated, and Ted reminded us to always be energetic and enthusiastic when working with a young populations. As we left the CDL, we all agreed that we have gained a lot of experience throughout the trip and that we have truly grown into a great team that can naturally work together each day.

After the CDL it was time for us to embark on our journey to UK. We hoped in the car at 11:15, so that we could make it to Lexington in time for our 12:30 appointment. Lexington is one of the largest cities in Kentucky and has a population of 300,000 people. We all know UK for it's amazing basketball team, but I was very excited to see what it's College of Health Science's had to offer. We met with Sharon Stewart, Ed.D., the Interim Dean and Professor of the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences. Dean Stewart gave us a great overview of the Lexington area and UK in general, and ultimately discussed both the masters and doctorate programs available at UK in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Her overview was very detailed and gave us a great feel for UK. After the overview, Dean Stewart showed us around the entire Speech and Hearing clinic and even brought us into one of the classrooms. It was a great tour and all of us felt as though their clinic was HUGE. It was a nice, brand new facility. After the tour we all set out to explore the campus and, naturally, hit up the bookstore. We all got various UK items for both ourselves and our families.

After UK, we went to Hall's on the River, which is a restaurant that claim's it serves southern food with a twist. We all were very hungry and were able to sample a ton of great foods. We were able to eat such things as, beer cheese nachos, Hot Brown's, fried pickles, deep fried oreos and tons of sea food. One thing is for sure, we have never had a bad meal in Kentucky. After Hall's we returned to the campus and throughout the night talked, watched movies, and laughed. We are all having a lot of fun, but naturally the night ended early, as we all went to bed to be rested for our early hearing screenings the next day!

Today we continued our hearing screenings at the Child Development Lab. We have become an efficient team and are completing the screenings much faster and with ease. Today we saw four children. Three of them were very cooperative. The forth child was a bit uneasy and clung to his mother for the entire process. Even though he was less than excited to let us look in and touch his ears, we were able to complete otoscopy, tympanometry, and otoacoustic emissions-- a success!

Afterwards, we visited the Buffalo Trace Distillery, an interesting and important part of Kentucky history. The distillery began in 1787 and currently consists of 119 acres and 114 buildings. It is located on an ancient buffalo migration path (hence the name). The cool thing about this particular distillery is that it is the oldest continually operating distillery in the U.S. and was operational even during Prohibition. Locals were only able to purchase whiskey if it was for "medicinal" purposes and they had a prescription from their physician. Those of us that are 21 were able to have a taste. It was quite an experience. :)

The two hour drive was well worth it, many of us were much more surprised then expected We started out our time by going to watch a short video which talked about the history of the derby and then shortly after headed out on a behind the scenes tour. The driver took us the other side of the tracks most people do not get to see. In this back area we not only gained further details in to the Kentucky Derby, as well as all the races that take place but we also saw thousands of horses in their stalls, along with a beautiful view of the complex. After the tour we headed into the gift shop where Kara bought a Kentucky Derby hat and then to the cafe for a lovely lunch. We then headed to the Derby Museum where we viewed clothes worn by the famous to the derby, trophies, statues, informative display and we also got to have a chance at horse racing ourselves through numerous games. Our time in Churchill downs ended by going into the stands and experiencing a race. Our tour guide previously informed us that the 5th race { 1 1/16 mile} is the best one to watch because it starts at the crowd side as opposed to the other side, so that is the one that we went to watch. During the race our legal half of the group experienced mint juleps, Nolan, Melinda, and Kara all agreed that this drink was not to their liking but they had to try it because they were at Churchill Downs. We had such a great time and none of us wanted to leave. I personally loved Churchill Down and have found it to be one of my favorite parts of the trip thus far, and most of the others feel the same way!
Today we all took advantage of sleeping in as long as we could. Once we all got up and ready we went to Berea Coffee & Tea for breakfast/ lunch around 2. Then we went off to Old Town in Berea and went to the little shops that were around town. We realized we did not have enough time to hit all the shops before we had to leave so we decided that we must go back. We left and went to dinner at the Back Porch, which was a barbecue. After dinner we looked around the cute little shops at Renfro Valley. At 8 we all went to the concert and first enjoyed Asleep at the Wheel, then after intermission came the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. We all sang along to the songs that we knew and we enjoyed ourselves with the songs that we did not know. After the concert was over we all came back to dorms to get ready for another fun filled day tomorrow!! Well... At dinner tonight Dr. Johnson left our table for a moment. Melinda took the opportunity to try on his famous hat and it turned into us all trying it on for fun. This truly shows how much of a family we have become on this trip and how much fun we have together!
Katrinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00839344759778026692noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-403125952836333411.post-58935399361680338962012-05-18T23:01:00.001-04:002012-05-18T23:02:19.449-04:00 Talk about a Friday Treat! Ted arranged for us to sleep in this morning, mostly because we have all been under the weather and in need for extra rest. We got up at around 11 this morning and went to lunch in the Berea dining hall around 12. Once again, we hit up our favorite coffee shop and met Ted for the day's adventure. The plan for the day was to check out Harlan County, which is about 2 hours from Berea. Many would wonder, "why on earth would you be going there?" Well, before this trip, we had class every day for a few weeks. During these class periods, we watched a few documentaries, and one of them had a song in it sang by Patty Loveless called "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive." The tune is quite catchy, and we all have been singing it literally nonstop since we've heard it. Because of our little obsession, Ted found a way for us to visit the county/town of Harlan. When we got there, we searched around for some activities to engage in. We explored the visitor's center, and found a person to direct us to an area for picture taking. We followed the directions, and we kind of decided to look for hollers instead of going to the picture spot. Our look for hollers was going quite well, and we got a few nice pictures. However, some of the residents saw us and were not too happy with us...so we had to book it out of there. A man did follow us in his truck, but he turned out to be friendlier than expected.
After our holler search, we headed back toward Berea, but we made a pit stop along the way in Corbin, KY. This little town is the home of the Kentucky Fried Chicken Museum. Personally, I was sincerely excited about this stop. I worked at KFC for 2 years, and I simply love the restaurant. We got a lot of neat pictures, especially with The Colonel! We enjoyed dinner there as well, and I was interested in seeing the difference in foods that are served at KFC here in Kentucky compared to where I worked in Pennsylvania. Here, they had baked beans, potato salad, and chicken liver, which are all things that my KFC did not have. All in all, it was a nice place to stop and grab some grub. Ted then drove us back to our dorm where we are just hanging out for the evening. We have a few more fun things planned this weekend, so stay tuned!
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Today started off with eating breakfast and then heading of to the CDL. Again, we screened four children most of which were cooperative and/or entertaining throughout the screenings. Afterwards we relaxed at our favorite Berea coffee and tea shop until it was time to go looking at hollers. Below you will see some scenes from hollers in Jackson County (the county over from Madison). The hollers proved to be very exciting and true to some images we had scene in videos. Afterwards, when heading back, we accidentally found a spring carnival in the small town McKee. The carnival wasn't too large but we still had fun on a tilt-a-world. At the end of the day we had dinner at a local pizzeria, Pappaleno's and it was very good. We are currently preparing for bed.Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12039781057257253618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-403125952836333411.post-83619484817557446732012-05-16T22:27:00.000-04:002012-05-16T22:38:19.444-04:00 While students back at Elmira College were enjoying their traditional no-class Wednesday, our group of newcomer Appalachians was occupied with a busy schedule. Similar to the last few days, we started off our morning with the performance of hearing screenings at the CDL. We saw three children today, and it was a mutual consensus of the group that these children were a bit different than the previous children screened. A couple of the children from today's time slot showed us how difficult the administration of the screenings can actually be. Their ear canals were windy and curvy, as those of children normally are. It was difficult for us to get some of the test results for this reason. Ted helped us out, though, and we finished each screening accordingly. In addition, one of the children from today was a bit bashful, and we were ultimately unable to screen his hearing. We will be seeing him next week for another try.
After our time in the CDL, we headed over to the campus coffee shops. We went to the Main Street Cafe first. Here we all ordered lunch, most of us preferring hamburgers. Once lunch was consumed, we moved about two shops down to the other coffee shop, Berea Coffee & Tea. This is the place where a lot of the college students from Berea spend their time. We hung out outside drinking our coffee for about an hour. It was then time for our main event of the day: a presentation on Appalachian gardening by Margaret and Adrian Dotson. This couple is a native of the state of Kentucky, and their personal heritage dates back to show a lot of experience with gardening and cultivation. They set up a powerpoint presentation for our group in one of the classrooms at Berea. They mentioned a lot about the history of the immigrants and how they allowed families to come and live in the Appalachian region. This immigration caused recreational and social bonds to form in many communities, and even ethnic groups came together. The Dotson's spoke a lot about the difference between the stereotypes of Appalachia to what is actually real. Their main focus of the discussion, though, was the history, traditions, and changes in Appalachian gardening. They started by explaining their lineage and how their Appalachian roots correlated with what they know about gardening today. The remainder of the lecture consisted of the descriptions of some of the crops and food that the Dotson's grew up learning how to make. Some of the foods we learned about were cornmeal, love apples (tomatoes), churning butter, plucking chickens, and butchering hogs. After the lecture, we were invited to the Dotson's home for a supper cooked by Mrs. Dotson. Before supper, Mr. Dotson gave us each a lesson on an instrument in which he excels: the dulcimer. This instrument is like a guitar, but it has less strings and less frets. We played about three songs with his help. For dinner, Mrs. Dotson made us cornbread and beans, and a salad and a few other side dishes were provided as well. They welcomed us into their home and told us a lot more about different parts of Kentucky. Ted took us for ice cream after dinner; it was an end to a fine day.
No really, a little boy ran right up to me and wrapped his arms around my leg. The lab was very impressive. The first floor contained several classrooms, two infant rooms, a lunch area, and plenty of space for the little ones to run around and ride tricycles. The upstairs had observation stations for students to observe the classrooms and infant rooms below. The CDL primarily provides childcare for the young children of
college students, staff, and faculty. Behind the CDL was a wonderful Berea College Eco-Village. They actively filter rain water, compost matter, recycle, grow food, and use solar panels for electricity.

Before we started our hearing screenings here, we had no idea that children could be so well behaved and polite. Many of them listened to our directions carefully, giggled as we showed them our cool "computers" and "flashlights," and cheerfully thanked us on their way out. They appeared very comfortable with the staff at the facility, almost as if they were part of the same big family. It is truly a pleasure to work with children from this community.
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Today we attended the CDL in the morning where we screened three for children ranging from ages 3-6. Each child had a distinct and different personality, ranging from rather passive to very energetic. Before heading to Richmond the group walked to the local coffee and tea shop (where we decided we would return for dinner later). The coffees and teas proved to be exceptionally good and we all agreed we would be making frequent visits. Afterwards, we ate at the campus dinning hall and quickly headed to Eastern Kentucky University. Faculty members of the speech and hearing clinic gave us an informative tour regarding their speech and hearing clinic and also informed us on their graduate program. Two students also gave us a tour of some of the main buildings around campus, including a library which is made of glass and surrounds some of the other academic buildings. Of course our visit was not complete without a trip to the campus bookstore to purchase some extremely necessary school apparel. Everyone has been feelings under the weather today but our spirits remain high and we intend to have a peaceful night watching movies and recovering. Karahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12039781057257253618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-403125952836333411.post-23736802129835760892012-05-14T22:29:00.002-04:002012-05-14T22:33:24.351-04:00Cold Kentucky Rain
Snapped this pic (Sunday) on a backwoods, holler road. The rain let up today and we saw hollers in a different light. Everyone has been inspired by the Patty Loveless recording of "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive." Check the link below ...
Hello everyone! We haven't posted over the last couple of days because we were so busy traveling and getting acclamated to the Berea College campus. Yesterday, we woke up bright and early at 6:30 a.m. to get ready for our long car ride from Lion and Crow Cabins in Virginia to the Berea Campus. After we ate a light breakfast of bagels and coffee we hit the road at 7:30 a.m. and began traveling. I am the elected navigator for the trip and being dedicated to my duties, I sat in the front with Ted and helped him with directions. The girls on the other hand fell asleep before we were on the highway. At 10 a.m. we stopped at McDonalds for a quick bite to eat, before quickly getting on the road again. We were all already pumped to sample local southern food, so we quickly jumped at the opportunity to stop at the Cracker Barrel located in West Virginia's state capital Charleston. Although it wasn't by any means the real stuff, we still enjoyed the cornbread, collard greens, chicken and dumplins and all other food offerings at the Cracker Barrel. The rest of the day consisted of driving and sleeping on and off for all of us, with our fearsome leader driving the whole way there. We finally reached Kentucky and we were all extremely excited. This trip we have been planning since October so to finally see the sign that read "Welcome to Kentucky," we all were extremely excited. After arriving in Kentucky, every five minutes we all would ask Ted, "Are we there yet?" We finally arrived on the Berea College campus and were greeted by Ms. Amanda, who is in charge of housing for the college. We are staying at Elizabeth Rogers Dormitory and are lucky enough to each be living in our own room. Once we all settled in, we met in the pantry to talk to Ms. Amanda about what was open around town and on the campus and quickly found out that we missed our first opportunity to sample Berea College's dining hall. So we went to a really nice mexican restaurant called Mariachi's, which had great authentic mexican food and by the end of the meal we were soooooooo stuffed. But the meal was not over, and I found out earlier in the meal Ted informed our waitor that it was Taryn's and Katrina's birthday. In actuality, Katrina's birthday isn't til the 26th and Taryn's is even farther, June 6th. Both the girls wanted the mexican hats and the fried ice cream, so the birthday idea proved to be the best option. I have a feeling this will be a tradition on the trip. Once the hats and ice cream's arrived we all had fun taking photos with the hats. After dinner, Ted took us to Wal Mart where many of us bought things, since we found out that we forgot to pack minor but important things. After Wal Mart, Ted dropped us off at the dorm at around 9 p.m. When the others unpacked, Melinda and I decided to explore the campus. It was pouring rain, but that did not stop us and we ended up seeing the entire campus! It really is an amazing place. After the unofficial campus tour, Melinda and I returned to the dorm where we hanged out with the rest of the group until we all fell asleep. Well that is a summary of the events of Day # 3 and we would post about today's events, but we are anxious to go look at the campus as one big group. Until tomorrow!
Well late last night started out by playing "Real People" (which Kara won due to all her stereotypes), then we went outside and cooked hotdogs over an open flame around 11:30 at night. We all eventually went to sleep in Acorn Hill. This morning we all woke up and had breakfast around 10am and we left to hit the Shanandoah National Park. We saw many different overlooks from Skyline Drive, which were beautiful. We stopped about halfway on the hills at Skyland for lunch. Here we all had a decent lunch! After we explored the gift shop we went on a hike on the Appalachian Trail for about a mile. We did not encounter any animals while walking however while driving we saw quite a few deer and birds. After we left the trail we went and got some delicious ice cream before we came back to the cabins to BBQ. We got back and started up the grill and marinated the steaks. Then Taryn, Katrina, and I cooked the steak and corn on the grill while the others made the beans and salad. The meal took a while to cook however it was delicious and well worth the wait. We cleaned up and now are all waiting for the fire so that we can make smores and enjoy our last night in the woods!Amandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07297184663771602371noreply@blogger.com0
